It reminded me of when I was stationed in Europe in the early 1980's. Back then there was so much tension about things. The people are more friendly than they were in the past and seemed like they couldn't do enough to help with things like getting around the city and great places to eat.
Ah the wine! Some of the greatest tour you can take in France on short one or two day jaunts from the city are the wine tours. If your going to cut costs on anything, do it on the hotels and use the money to go on wine tasting tours. I love a sweet wine but enjoyed tasting them all. Many of the vineyards have great restaurants as well and from Paris you can get lots of tours to the country side. I enjoy a little of the local flair when traveling so the big hotels are not my cup of tea or glass of wine to coin a phrase. The locals will lead you to better less known sites for more interesting adventures and more exciting new friendships.
